Year 6 on the Severn Valley Railway

14 June 2012

On Thursday 14th June Year 6 visited the Severn Valley Railway for a “We'll Meet Again” workshop.

The children were evacuated by steam train from Kidderminster to Highley. At Highley they had themed displays in the Visitor & Education Centre which included a replica Anderson Shelter, which the children were allowed to go into, household items from the 1940s, and a Royal Mail train from the 1940s, where the children sorted the mail. Also the children were able to write a postcard home after being evacuated and packed the items they thought would be needed for their stay in the 1940s.

After lunch the children were given a demonstration of how fires were put out during the war after a bombing raid. While waiting for the train to return the children all joined in with the costumed re-enactors to do the hokey cokey.

On the train journey back to Kidderminster the children sang World War II songs.

The children were all dressed up in 1940s costume which added to the enjoyment of the day.
