Year 5 Visit Bristol Docks

24 November 2015

On Tuesday 24th November, Year 5 travelled by coach to Bristol Docks.

The purpose of the visit was, as part of the History Curriculum to learn about what life was like on board a ship, to see the 'S.S. Great Britain'. This ship was designed by Brunel in the Victorian era and was launched in 1843. It is classed as the world's first luxury liner.

On board the ship the children learned what life was like for passengers and crew on the luxury liner travelling to America when it was first launched and then how it changed through the years to become an emigrant ship carrying first class and steerage passengers to Australia as well as carrying troops and horses during the Crimean War.

Also the class went to see 'The Matthew', a replica Tudor ship and compared the differences between the two ships.

The children enjoyed a very informative day and were commended on their impeccable behaviour.
